Uterine fibroids, also called leiomyomas or myomas, are noncancerous tumors that grow on the muscular walls of the uterus. They are the most common tumors in a woman’s reproductive organs. Almost 1 in 4 women have them, but they usually don’t cause any symptoms. In some cases, they can lead to pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, trouble getting pregnant and miscarriage. They can also make it harder to have a natural birth. The cause isn’t known, but a hormone imbalance is often linked to them. Having a family history of fibroids increases your risk.

The size of your fibroid is an important factor in how your doctor treats it. Fibroids range in size from as small as a pinhead to larger than a melon. They can grow in one or more groups in the uterus, and they may be located in different parts of the body. Whether you have symptoms or not, most doctors recommend that you follow up with your primary care doctor or gynecologist regularly.

There are several treatments for uterine fibroids, including medicine, surgery and natural methods such as exercise and diet. Your doctor will determine which option is right for you based on the type of symptoms and how severe they are.자궁선근증한약

A doctor may suggest medicines that can help ease some symptoms, such as menstrual pain, nausea and vomiting and fatigue. A doctor may also prescribe a hormone-lowering medication such as progesterone to reduce the levels of estrogen in your body, which can encourage fibroid growth. In some cases, a doctor may recommend surgery to remove the fibroid or to treat other uterus problems. If you want to preserve your fertility, a surgeon can remove only the fibroid or the entire uterus (a hysterectomy).

In less invasive treatments, ultrasound guidance is used to locate fibroids and to guide the doctor in using heat, an electric current, cold water or extreme hotness to shrink or destroy them. Fibroids can also be treated with a procedure called uterine artery embolization, which involves injecting tiny particles into the arteries of your uterus to cut off their blood supply. This procedure is also sometimes called laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation or Acessa.자궁근종한의원

When your doctor is recommending surgery, she will discuss the risks and benefits of each option with you. You will need to think about what is important to you, such as whether you want to try for a pregnancy in the future or how severe your symptoms are. If you choose a surgical option, it’s best to wait until your uterus has healed (6 to 12 months) before trying to get pregnant. You should also talk to your doctor about the possibility of having another operation, such as a cesarean section, because it may impact the health of your baby if you have a fibroid.
